CEO for Commonwealth Virtual University Selected
Frankfort KY (Jan. 5, 1999) -
The Council on Postsecondary Education (CPE) today announced the selection
of Mary Beth Susman as the Chief Executive Officer of the new Commonwealth Virtual University.
Dr. Susman, currently the president of the Colorado Electronic Community College and the
Executive Director of the Education Technology Center in Denver, will begin her new duties
February 1.
Dr. Susman has developed a national reputation for her work in the use of distance learning
technology to teach college courses. As president of the Colorado Electronic Community College,
she oversees a "virtual campus" that offers courses, training, and degree programs, all
electronically.
CPE President Gordon K. Davies called Dr. Susman's hiring "a significant milestone in Kentucky's
effort to change and strengthen its system of colleges and universities. Dr. Susman has an excellent
understanding of how computers and communications technology will be used to provide education and
training to millions of Americans in the next few decades. Under her direction, the Commonwealth
Virtual University will become a model copied by other states."
The Commonwealth Virtual University (CVU) was designed to facilitate instruction and learning "any
time, any place," using distance education technology. Through the CVU, students will be able to take
courses via satellite, over the Internet, and through inter-active television. They will have access
to electronic library services through the Commonwealth Virtual Library and will be able to use a computer
to register, take exams, and make tuition payments. Its aim is to expand access to postsecondary education
all across Kentucky, especially for women and men whose jobs and family responsibilities make it impossible
to travel to the state's colleges and universities. It also will provide Kentucky students with access to
the best teaching and information resources available electronically throughout the nation and the world.
