Virtual University offers 200 online courses from 20 Kentucky colleges

State education partners provide content, instruction

Twenty Kentucky colleges and universities will offer nearly 200 courses online through the Kentucky Commonwealth Virtual University during the summer and fall 2000 terms.

Business, accounting, computer science, health care, education and general education courses are just a sampling of the 200 offered. All courses are accredited, transferable and taught by Kentucky faculty.

"Through the virtual university, busy Kentuckians no longer need to leave their hometown to pursue more education," explained Dr. Mary Beth Susman, CEO of the one-year-old university.

"The college classroom is now as close as a student's home computer, public library, office, or where ever else a student might have Internet access," she added.

Kentucky's colleges and universities offering anywhere, any time education through the virtual university include Eastern Kentucky University, Kentucky Community and Technical College System, Kentucky State University, Morehead State University, Murray State University, Northern Kentucky University, University of Kentucky, Lexington Community College, University of Louisville, and Western Kentucky University.

The 12 colleges within KCTCS offering courses include Central Kentucky Technical College, Elizabethtown Community College, Henderson Community College, Hopkinsville Community College, Jefferson Community College, Lees/Hazard Community College, Madisonville Community College, Maysville Community College, Owensboro Community College, Paducah Community College and Prestonsburg Community College.

New this fall to the virtual university is an online associate of art's degree offered by KCTCS and KCVU. This online degree is fully transferable toward a four-year business degree.

Other programs offered through KCVU include a Bachelor's of Independent Studies, Going the Distance: The Next Frontier, Library Science certificate, Masters degree in Communication Disorders, Network and Information System Technology, Nursing, Office Systems Certification Program and Online Special Education Project. Courses leading toward a Master's of business administration are also offered.

Registration for the summer and fall terms is currently under way. Prospective students can view courses and program areas at the KCVU web site at www.kcvu.org.

Kentucky's virtual university is the fastest growing virtual education institution of its kind. This past semester, the online university grew by over 700 percent. High quality course content, interactive instruction, the Kentucky Virtual Library, and a full range of advising, registration and other academic and student services offered online contribute to its success.

Established by the General Assembly in 1997, KCVU is designed to meet the educational needs of working Kentuckians and others who, due to time, distance and family obligations, face difficulty accessing traditional campus-bases classes.
