Increased access is the goal of unique partnership
FRANKFORT, Ky. (April 26, 2001) -
Governor Paul E. Patton unveiled a unique partnership program
between the Kentucky National Guard and Kentucky Virtual University
(KYVU) in the State Capitol this morning.
The joint endeavor - which provides Internet access to Kentucky
residents across the state - will initially consist of three
National Guard armories with access to the programs, courses
and services of KYVU, the Department of Defense, as well as
a host of other training opportunities and information being
developed for distribution via the worldwide web.
Calling the partnership "an important program for Kentuckians,"
Governor Patton praised the efforts of the Guard and KYVU. "It
is a great demonstration of how various parts of state government
can work together," said Patton.
Dr. Gordon Davies, President of the Council for Postsecondary
Education, echoed the Governor saying, "It just broadens
the access. That is what we are all about -- helping people."
Major General Groves called it, "as positive an example
of partnership as I can think of." It allows us to train
soldiers while providing these opportunities to community members."
The initial configuration of the joint venture consists of six
dedicated workstations installed at three Guard armory sites
selected specifically for their lack of public Internet connectivity
and distance from a university network. The first three sites
are Marion in Crittenden County, Tompkinsville in Monroe County
and Jackson in Breathitt County.
KYVU has provided the basic infrastructure consisting of one
video projector, three laser printers and six workstations and
chairs. Total investment by KYVU is $23,900. "For a little
over $23,000 we have established three new higher education
sites," said Mary Beth Susman, CEO of KYVU. Expansion of
the project will enable the Commonwealth to provide educational
opportunities across the state with very little cost using existing
community-based facilities and existing communications services.
