Online Kentucky Stats to be unveiled

FRANKFORT, KY (May 10, 2001) -

The Boone County Public Library's Scheben Branch in Union, Ky., will be the site of the statewide unveiling of Kentucky's newest online resource, Kentucky Stats. The latest addition to the state's virtual library collection features statewide statistics on just about everything in Kentucky, including its people, products, trade, economy and environment. The ceremony is scheduled Friday, May 18 at 1 p.m.

"Kentucky Stats will save citizens, researchers and students a lot of net surfing when they need Kentucky's statistical data in a hurry," said Miko Pattie, director of the Kentucky Virtual Library. "This unique service fills a need for an online authoritative resource that gathers all Kentucky-oriented statistics in one place," added Pattie. "Similar to other KYVL services, this resource is a collaborative product of thousands of hours of work from many dedicated librarians all over the state," she added.

University of Kentucky's Sandra McAninch, chair of the work group that developed the resource, added, "Kentucky librarians, library users, students, small businesses and local governments will now have access to a web-based collection of statistics about Kentucky anytime, day or night." Available 24 hours a day and seven days a week, the reference tool is accessed through the KYVL at www.kyvl.org/html/gia/kystats.shtml

Kentucky Stats will be updated continuously. Suggestions for additions to the resource are welcome. To comment on or use this new product, visit the KYVL Web site at www.kyvl.org or call the library's call center toll-free at 1-877-588-5288, Monday-Friday, from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The Kentucky Virtual Library is part of the Kentucky Virtual University. Through the KYVL, Kentuckians can access more than 30 electronic databases with more than 5,000 full-text journal and newspaper titles and online library catalogs with nearly 10 million volumes housed in Kentucky libraries.
