Kentucky's history online at Kentuckiana Digital Library
FRANKFORT, KY (April 11, 2002) - Civil War diaries, tales from people living in late 19th century Kentucky, photographs of Appalachia from Doris Ulmann, and recordings of old-time fiddlers are just a few of the things that you can access in the Kentuckiana Digital Library.
"We are very excited to be doing this cutting edge work with the libraries of Kentucky," said Miko Pattie, director of the Kentucky Virtual Library, "It is important to make these resources easily available to all of Kentucky and the world."
The Kentuckiana Digital Library, a project of the Kentucky Virtual Library, digitizes finding aids, photos, sound recordings, diaries, scrapbooks, books of Kentucky history and other materials held by the special libraries and archives of Kentucky. Currently the collection includes more than 3700 finding aids, 10,000 photographs, 80 oral history transcripts, 120 electronic texts (diaries, scrapbooks, etc) and more than 50 audio files.
"This is a dream come true for researchers, teachers, students, and anyone interested in Kentucky history and life," said committee chair Clara Keyes. "To be able to search and find photographs, archival documents, and other primary resources delivered to your computer screen anywhere in the world would have been inconceivable just a few years ago. We have worked over the past six years to establish this online digital collection, which will keep growing as we continue to digitize unique and rare materials which document the rich and exciting history of Kentucky, America's 'First Frontier'."
Libraries who have included materials from their collections include Centre College, Eastern Kentucky University, Filson Historical Society, Georgetown College, Kentucky Department of Library and Archives, Kentucky Historical Society, Kentucky State University, Morehead State University, University of Kentucky, University of Louisville, Western Kentucky University, Asbury College, Berea College, Transylvania University and Lexington Public Library.
