FRANKFORT, KY (April 26, 2002) - Registration
for hundreds of online courses is now open for the summer
and fall terms at the Kentucky Virtual University. Located
online at www.kyvu.org, the state's official cyber campus
offers a growing number of online degree programs at the
certificate, associate's, bachelor's and master's levels,
in addition to professional development and GED preparation
courses.
"By offering courses and programs online,
the Kentucky Virtual University is leveling the playing
field for Kentuckians," stated CEO Daniel Rabuzzi.
"From GED preparatory classes to master's degrees,
online tutors and a virtual library, Kentuckians can access
quality education opportunities aggregated at KYVU's one-stop
website."
Student Pam Logan, of Corbin, Ky., agrees.
"I think KYVU provides many students with the opportunity
to obtain a college education who would otherwise be unable
to." A more highly trained workforce, she said, will
provide an incentive for companies to locate to her area.
"As a Southeastern Kentuckian, I see
companies pass up opportunities to locate in our area,"
she added.
Logan, a single mother, is attracted to
online learning for another important reason. "It
is nice to have the flexibility KYVU provides to spend
more time with my children," she said.
Sherrill Smith, associate superintendent
and director of pupil personnel for Frankfort Independent
Schools, recommends online learning for yet another reason-the
high level of interaction between classmates and professors.
"Taking classes through KYVU was a wonderful opportunity.
I was involved in the course for superintendent certification
through Eastern Kentucky University. This was an outstanding
class with wonderful interaction between classmates and
Dr. Leonard Burns, our professor.
"I would highly recommend classes through
KYVU and feel KYVU offers a great opportunity for teachers
and administrators across this great Commonwealth to get
a quality education without leaving their home. The level
of interaction was greater than a traditional class,"
stressed Smith, who has since earned his superintendent's
certification.
Before taking a leap into cyberspace, Rabuzzi
encourages prospective students to talk with their instructor
or advisor and to review a checklist, "Is KYVU for
You," accessed from the KYVU website. Prospective
students can also call toll-free at 1-877-740-4357.
Nearly 6,000 Kentuckians, representing all
120 Kentucky counties, enrolled in KYVU for the Spring
2002 term in college, professional development and GED
preparation courses. An additional 327 students enrolled
from 35 other states and two foreign countries.
