Kentucky Virtual University honors online faculty pioneers

(Frankfort, KY) - Kentucky Virtual University recently recognized five Kentucky educators for significant advancements to the field of online learning. The first annual Kentucky Virtual University Online Excellence Awards were handed out in Louisville at the Council for Postsecondary Education’s Faculty Development Luncheon. The award program recognizes exemplary integration of instructional best practices with technology.

The recipients include: Mark Garrison, Kentucky State University; Mary Anne McMurray, Henderson Community College; Carolyn Rude-Parkins, University of Louisville; and Bill C. Greenwalt and Linda S. Todd, Western Kentucky University.

On hand to present the awards were Daniel Rabuzzi, chief executive officer of KYVU, and William E. Myers, Director of the Delphi Center and chair of the KYVU Online Excellence Awards Committee. A statewide panel of students, faculty and course developers judged the nominations.

“We are delighted to honor Kentucky's pioneers in online education,” said Rabuzzi. “These award recipients have created superb learning environments that demonstrate such good practices as creating highly interactive classrooms, respecting different learning styles, providing prompt feedback and communicating high expectations,” he added.

“This is a great opportunity to spotlight the years of hard work by Kentucky’s online educators,” added Myk Garn, chief academic officer for KYVU. He said that KYVU intends to make this award an annual event. Interested educators should expect a call for nominations this fall.

Along with a symbolic trophy, the recipients received a cash award and a certificate signed by Governor Paul Patton. Recipients have been asked to discuss their work in an online article/journal and present their work at the next annual CPE/KYVU conference.

The Kentucky Virtual University is the Commonwealth’s official virtual campus, serving more than 15,000 Kentuckians through the Spring 2002 term. The KYVU website at www.kyvu.org provides one-stop access for learners of all ages seeking convenient, accessible and affordable online education.
