Kentucky Virtual Library for Kids links children to free, online resources
Kentucky Virtual Library for Kids was launched recently
at Frankfort's Hearn Elementary School, marking another virtual first
in Kentucky. Every elementary school student in all 120 Kentucky counties
now has free, 24/7 access to "Space Dog" and "All the Known Information
in the Universe" through this fun, safe and informative portal designed
for first through fifth graders.
The site is accessed through the Kentucky Virtual Library,
a part of the Kentucky Virtual University. Children will need a user
name and password from their local or school librarian to access the
site.
Gov. Paul E. Patton and Norma Adams, chair of the Council
on Postsecondary Education, were the featured speakers.
"Kentucky has been a national leader in online learning
through the creation of the Kentucky Virtual University, Kentucky Virtual
Library and Kentucky Virtual High School," said Patton. "With the addition
of the Kentucky Virtual Library for Kids, we are now able to provide
citizens with affordable and accessible online learning opportunities
that span their entire lifetime."
Also on the site, students will find-
· Grolier's Encyclopedias in English and Spanish;
· Searchasaurus that connects students to magazines and almanacs;
· Kentuckiana Digital Library filled with historical documents; and
· A step-by-step guide to help students learn how to research online.
"As the agency that coordinates change and improvement
in Kentucky's postsecondary education system, the Council is pleased
to launch this collaborative project that provides equitable access
to quality library and information resources designed for elementary
students -- our college students of tomorrow," said Adams.
Fifteen Kentucky educators and librarians at elementary,
secondary and postsecondary levels throughout the state participated
in the planning of this project.
"Kentucky Virtual Library for Kids is a stellar example
of how educators and librarians at the elementary, secondary and postsecondary
levels can work together to promote a seamless pathway to college and
help build a new economy for Kentucky," explained Adams.
